Adaptation of historic police station campus into unique art, heritage, and gathering center
Tai Kwun reclaims the historic former Central Police Station and jail complex, a compact, terraced urban site of approximately 10,000 square meters, with 15+ low-rise buildings dating to the mid-1860s. The unique, historic buildings have been carefully rehabilitated to serve cultural, educational, and commercial uses, while new structures were added to satisfy flexible exhibit and gathering functions that the historic buildings could not accommodate. The campus landscape between the buildings, including several historic yards and an intriguing profusion of alleys and stairways, has also been preserved and improved for public use.
